Travel Training E Brochure

Pure have secured funding from Stockport Council for a new travel training team to travel train young people in Stockport to travel independently

Children from the age of12 who have a statement of educational need and are currently travelling by provided transport to and from school will be given 1:1 training accompanying the young person on route from home to college, building on knowledge, confidence and ability until they are able to travel independently.

The new team will be 5 travel trainers and a co-ordinator Nina Hinton who explains the benefits to the child.

"The child will benefit from increased confidence, independence and freedom. We are hoping that by learning these important life skills and removing perceived barriers, this project will empower them to travel independently to other places, giving them greater control of their own life. This training should provide a toolkit which the young person can take forward to increase learning, employment and social opportunities for themselves in the future.I am really excited to be working on this project and cannot wait for the first group of young people to begin their training. The initial group are starting college in September and I think it’s fantastic that they are getting the opportunity to turn up on the first day of term on public transport with their peers"

Ian Donegani, Senior Education Officer at SMBC explains how the Council and Stockport Residents will benefit form the project.

"This work is about developing independence with the belief that it will make young people more independent learners but more importantly become independent adults in society. As a very cost effective solution for the Council, it will also impact on other Council strategic objectives of reducing carbon omission and the development of the healthy schools agenda."
