In April 2006, Pure Innovations won a contract to provide Day Services for Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council.
Rochdale Council recognised the need to radically change their day service provision and asked Pure to take over and modernise three day centres.
The contract covers the provision of Day Services for up to 50 adults with learning disabilities living in the Middleton area of Rochdale. The people were spread across three buildings which ranged from a Grade II Listed building, a terraced house in a Council Estate, and a Youth Centre in Alkrington.
The Company soon learnt that in order to modernise the service, changes will have to be made that at times could be outside of people's comfort zones. What we found were three very traditional centres where people were minded and no vocational work going on.
Within a year, Pure Innovations has radically improved the services. Stepping up to the challenge of integrating people properly into the community, various volunteering projects were set up. Two of the buildings were closed down that were wholly unsuitable for day use.
Now working from our base at the Alkrington Youth Club, we offer a range of day-time activities that help to promote independence and personal development.
As with the rest of Pure Innovations' Care Services department, all activities in Rochdale are divided into Building-Based Services and Community Volunteering projects.
Pure's Rochdale Services also have a dedicated Employment Advisor, funded by the Learning and Skills Council. The Employment Advisor offers individual advice and support to source opportunities for training and development for the people who attend the service. Five people have now got jobs.
