Referrals can be made to Work Link from various sources:
- Via Disability Employment Advisors throughout Greater Manchester to access the WORKSTEP programme;
- Through Manchester City Council's Learning Disability Services; and
- Through Stockport Council's Social Services Departments, specifically the Learning Disability, Mental Health, Physical and Sensory and Care Leavers social work teams.
Jobseekers referred to Work Link are allocated an Employment Officer who will work on a one-to-one basis to produce an individually tailored work development and action plan.
Employment Officers assist with all aspects of job searching, from visiting local jobcentres and using internet sites, newspapers and job bulletins to identify suitable jobs.
In addition, Employment Officers will contact employers directly on behalf of the jobseeker with a view to negotiating suitable job opportunities. We also work with employers to provide information, advice and guidance to help them recruit job seekers with disabilities and increase the diversity of their workforce.
Support in employment
In the early stages of employment, Employment Officers will provide support in the workplace. All Employment Officers are trained in the use of Systematic Instruction Techniques (TSI) and job-related training is provided using this technique, increasing the chances of learning being successful. Access to additional support with literacy, numeracy and language skills can be provided and is delivered through a partnership arrangement with Learn Direct in Stockport.
Employment Officers also work to develop good relationships with employers and wherever possible support them to use the natural supports available in the workplace such as co-workers, colleagues and job specific training courses. This ensures employers are involved in the support process and in-work support is as discreet as possible.
Work Development Plans are produced that helps to identify the initial learning and achievement goals. Progress towards these goals are monitored closely in the initial stages of employment. The plan is a 'live' document and can be adjusted as required to ensure goals remain achievable.
Longer term monitoring is provided by the Progression Team through regular workplace reviews. Clients can be progressed off the programme when the employee has achieved their goals and no longer require support in work.
