Oldham Interns – the Whirlwind Tour

Posted on the 28th March 2018

Hair salon assistant, decorator, admin support –  these are  some of the brilliant work placements held by our Oldham interns.

Here is a taster of what they are up to,  out and about  building fences, operating print machinery, working in retail and more

Great placements!

The interns work towards an employability qualification with Oldham College.

On work placements  they are often supported by Pure job coaches. This  allows them time to master their new skills and eases the transition from Education to work.

Some interns have a hearing impairment and a signer is provided to assist with communication. Communication is important regardless of hearing issues as  course tutor  Sally Green explains.

Some students may experience communication difficulties: simple things such as the ability to make eye contact or being able to greet customers.

We can help them with that, both on the placement and in the classroom. These are skills for life as well as the workplace .

The interns are now two thirds  through their internships. In the coming months they will build on their new work skills and learn more about how to find and apply for jobs. All their experience will of course enhance their CVs.

Flexibility is important to an internship as Pure Senior Employment Officer Mohamed Dawood explains.

A supported internship is a study programme specifically aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 who have a statement of special educational needs or an EHC plan, who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so.

Work placements are tailored to the interns individual career aspirations. They normally have three work placement rotations of 10-weeks.

However if the intern is enjoying the first placement, the employer can see the contribution being made and there is a possibility of paid activity beyond the scheme, then we tend to keep them in the same location.

We wish all our interns success and hope they and you, enjoy their video.

At Oldham we have a  strong partnership with Oldham Council and Oldham College plus all the wonderful employers who provide work placements:
