Interns Celebrate At The Christie

Posted on the 25th May 2018

The achievements of our brilliant supported interns based at The Christie were celebrated this week at a special event in their  honour.

Bilal, Thomas and Connor were presented with certificates in recognition of their work by Eve Lightfoot, the hospital’s Director of Workforce.

The Christie have been a fantastic supportive employer providing work placements for the interns  across the hospital. They include a portering role for Connor, an assistant role in the Cancer Information Centre for Thomas and a placement at The Christie in Oldham for Bilal.

This is the first year that we have run a Level Two, Access to Employment Internship and it has been wonderful to see the interns develop.

Thomas, for example, has grown in confidence, interacts with others and uses initiative. Job coaching and a little support really do give young people a sound foundation from which to grow new skills.

The interns also made speeches at the event. They all thanked Pure Employment Officer Lisa Crank and tutor Stephanie Logan, from The Manchester College, our partner in the programme. They also thanked their colleagues at The Christie and Bilal gave special mention to his support worker Cordelia.

The interns spoke  of how much they have learned and grown in confidence. This was demonstrated perfectly by their public speaking. In the audience were their family members, managers from  The Christie who had provided placements and Pure CEO Louise Parrott-Bates.

Speeches by the managers made it clear that the interns really had become valued members of their teams. You can see this too in this video of  their experience.

Not all the Level Two interns had placements at The Christie. See more here.

I was very happy with the way the managers worked. They gave me the tasks that everyone else was doing and I did them to the highest standards. Steve was a very good team leader. The team were very welcoming and accepting and they were happy I was there.

Connor - Speaking about his placement with the Portering Team

Connor really enjoyed his role at The Christie.

We send our congratulations to all the interns  We would also like to thank The Christie for being so supportive and everyone else who has made the first year of the Access to Employment  Supported Internship so rewarding.
