Pure Spreads The Word at The Travel Training Forum

Posted on the 20th December 2018

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was the special guest at the Greater Manchester Travel Training Forum (GMTTF.) Pure is a member of the forum and our presentation was on the importance of Travel Training within the voluntary sector. The presentation was delivered by Pure’s Travel Training Coordinator Paul Wainhouse. He explained the benefits of training as it enables people with an additional need not only to access our wide range of Employment and Care services, but to enjoy new freedom in many aspects of everyday life.

It was  also emphasised that Travel Training is great value for money as it saves local authorities and individuals the considerable costs of using mini-buses or taxis.

By training an 11 year old to travel independently, a local authority could see a saving of  in excess of £10,000 per person, during secondary education alone.

Crucially travel training builds confidence and self-esteem and can potentially open up new areas of social, education and employment opportunities for those taking part.

It also makes them a more visible part of their community, which is positive for both them and society.

Allison who received Travel Training so she can travel to and from work independently.

The Forum was opened by Councillor Mark Aldred. Different people gave presentations on various elements and perspectives of independent travel. For example, Azeem who has a visual impairment spoke about how Travel Training helped him overcome struggles. Other areas covered included a parent’s perspective, an employer’s view and more.

As members of the forum, we all know how important it is for the people we work with to become as independent as possible. The Travel Training Celebration is an ideal opportunity to let those in authority know how important it is to all those involved.

It was a pleasure to have the support of Mayor Andy Burnham and Councillor Mark Aldred at the GMTTF. We are glad to get the word out about how important independent travel is for people’s lives in Greater Manchester. Travel Training works!
