Dementia Drop In – A Hit At The Kitchen

Posted on the 24th January 2019

We hosted our first weekly Dementia Drop In at our Stockport cafe The Kitchen on Monday – and what a great success it was!

People living with dementia and their carers have an open invitation to  come along. Around 25 people attended the first session and it was a great opportunity for people to relax and chat together about shared experiences or life in general!

Books with photos of old Stockport were set out encouraging shared reminiscences and Pure staff were to hand encouraging conversations and helping forge new friendships.

The Kitchen Dementia Drop In differs from many in that it is held in a real working cafe. Several carers commented that the person they'd accompanied just enjoys going out for a coffee and something to eat in a cafe with other people like they always have done. It isn't a departure from normality in the way that similar drop ins in other environments may be.

Eating in a social environment is great too as it helps maintain independence and for some that can be just the encouragement needed to eat at all.

The Kitchen's bright interior

The Kitchen is a bright and welcoming space.

Music added to the friendly ambience and even encouraged a little seated dancing! For future sessions traditional board games will be to hand too.

The Drop In is held every Monday between 11am and 1pm at The Kitchen on Chestergate (behind Primark). It is supported by the Wellbeing Network, Age UK Stockport and Signpost Stockport for Carers.

People living with dementia and their carers will receive 20% off food and hot drinks. The Kitchen is designed to be a community hub and we are delighted to host these social and supportive weekly events.
