Steps Students Explore Work – and Forklift Trucks!

Posted on the 17th January 2019

Taking the driving seat in this shiny forklift truck was a highlight of a factory visit made by students on our Steps education programme. Well who wouldn’t love that!

A key element of our Steps course, (Steps Toward Employment and Progression), is to show young people a sample of  the wide range of  jobs that are available.

We asked the lovely people at Rowlinson Knitwear if the students could see what goes on behind the scenes in their Stockport premises. They could not have been more accommodating! They welcomed them in for a tour that took in all aspects of their warehouse, factory and offices.

Shane Banham showed the students the warehouse where clothing arrives, imported from many different countries. It was emphasised that Rowlinson uses only factories fully compliant with all health, safety and child labour regulations.

They were then shown the machines the operators use to  embroider company logos on to sweat shirts and other workwear.

In the Quality Control rooms they saw garments being put through rigorous testing such as multiple washes and button stress. This testing is important for Rowlinson to maintain its claim that its products are ‘smarter for longer’.

In the offices the students learned about other business roles including human resources  personnel, sales and administration.

Steps students are look around the large warehouse.

The visit was a great opportunity for the students to broaden their knowledge around many jobs they may not even have known existed.

Rowlinson is an employee-owned company and was crowned Employer of the Year 2018 at the Stockport Business Awards. We send our warmest thanks to everyone there for making the students so welcome and giving them this valuable insight into employment.
