NEW Gardening Course For Clients – We Dig It!

Posted on the 16th July 2019

Ryan, Nathan and Lee are working towards a Level 1 Horticultural Qualification. Come rain or shine they are busy each week keeping Alexandra Park in Oldham looking as beautiful as its Green Flag Award status demands.

Pure has teamed up with Oldham Council and Oldham College on this new project. Their work is all practical and assessed by the college through observation, discussion, video and a photographic portfolio assembled by the clients.

The team goes out every Thursday with a Pure Community Support Worker to complete a range of tasks. These include planting, cultivation, weeding, tidying and more. All these skills go towards completing their qualification and of course keeping the park in tip-top condition.

Amidst all their hard work the group share friendly hellos to passers by many of whom thank them for they are doing. There is plenty of light-hearted banter in the group and strong friendships have grown between them.

Gardening is great exercise and brings positive effects for physical and mental wellbeing.

I like all the tasks we do. I like tidying the park up and making it look clean. It's really good exercise and the first few times I did it I was worn out and slept all weekend. I am enjoying it.

Nathan, Pure Client

The team works from our base at The Boathouse Café in the park. You can see from the vibrant flowers in the picture below they are doing a great job. They have also created fabulous hanging baskets and filled some of the lovely planters made by our woodwork group.

This new project not only provides support for the council’s garden team, but is a fantastic educational opportunity for our clients.

Well done to Lee, Ryan and Nathan for their amazing work so far. We wish them the best of luck for the rest of their course!
