A Whirlwind Tour With Bertie The Bread Van

Posted on the 20th August 2019

We all know the cakes baked by our skillful clients at The Kitchen are delicious, but I had no idea just how far and wide they travel!

I’m Charlotte, Digital Marketer at Pure, and I spent a day with our trusty bread van Bertie travelling to so many lovely places and meeting great people along the way. It all started like this  …

It’s first thing in the morning and I meet Marc, Bertie’s driver at Pure’s bakery and cafe The Kitchen.  The teacakes have just come out of the oven and they smell amazing.

Pure’s Fiona is also there picking up fresh loaves for our weekly donation to local homeless charity The Wellspring.

While Marc is loading the van, Café Manager Sandra shows me our gleaming new second kitchen just for baking cakes. I wonder if they will change the café’s name to The Kitchens? … Maybe not!

Once all the bread is loaded we head to Levenshulme Inspire, a great social enterprise cafe and community hub in, yes, Levenshulme. We are greeted by  Café Manager Kris. Here is what he had to say.

The quality of the bread from The Kitchen is fantastic. We have people visit us just for the teacakes! Working with a company that has the ethos of Pure Innovations is an added bonus. It's a dream partnership.

Bertie’s next stop is Vernon Park Café with its magnificent long range views over Stockport. We park just outside the beautiful historic building – also home to our art gallery. It’s great to see Pure client Alex who helps at the cafe. He tells me he has now joined Pure’s drama group and how much he is enjoying it. Brilliant! It’s always great catching up with clients at our cafes.

We continue on to Etherow Park Café  where the ducks are enjoying the lovely lake – and the rain. They are eyeing our delicious loaves but won’t be sampling any of it. Remember all bread is bad for ducks. Healthy duck food is available from the Visitor Centre.

Next we head for the motorway and make our way across to  The Boathouse Cafe in Alexandra Park, Oldham. Marc comments on the beautiful scenery. It really is stunning with lovely flower beds, fountains and the ornate glasshouse. We find common ground in that we often try to get a picture of  the lake’s resident heron.

Dunwood Park  in Shaw is site of our newest cafe. It is another gem with woodland walks, play equipment, flowerbeds and much more. Bread and goodies from The Kitchen are soon out on the shelves in our cosy cafe tempting in customers.

Just then the heavens open. The plants at the park’s family-friendly gardening and cooking project ‘Seed to Pot’ are definitely getting a good watering!

Bertie, Marc and I are soon back on our way to Stockport where we pick up more fresh loaves from The Kitchen.  We are given a warm, smiley welcome from client and top baker Katherine. She expresses her delight at the number of  visitors the café had received that day.

These particular loaves are donations to local holiday hunger projects. Bertie has been delivering around 25 loaves each week to local community pantries in Brinnington and Bridge Hall. They are Pure’s contribution to the extra demand for supplies during the school holidays – a difficult time for many families.

This is our last call of the day and what a lovely day it has been. Bertie and I have traveled high and low across Greater Manchester. My personal highlight has to be seeing all the different staff and clients across the Pure cafés in one day. Thanks Bertie!
