One Voice Radio & Stockport Mayor Talk Disability Inclusion

Posted on the 23rd September 2019

Our One Voice radio team welcomed a very special guest to the studio: Stockport Mayor Laura Booth. The Mayor has spoken of her pride in being the first amputee to take on the role of Stockport’s first citizen. As an advocate for disability equality she and our One Voice team had lots to talk about.

The group had all prepared their own questions to ask. A big topic of discussion was disability inclusion tackling issues such as accessibility and under-representation.

The Mayor is a proud supporter of various charities including amputee charity LimbPower and Stockport Sharks Swimming Club for people with disabilities. The Mayor touched upon her visit to Stockport Pride and her aspirations for all round equality in Stockport.

I think One Voice is fantastic. This is inclusion in action! It's what drives me on and everyone has participated which is great.

As a society it is estimated 20 -25% of people have a disability. In Parliament under 1% of people have a disability. That needs to change. If you include the numbers of people affected such as carers there needs to be more representation.

Everyone really enjoyed speaking to the Mayor and they were all very passionate about the subjects discussed. The group asked about how one becomes Mayor in the first place and typical day in the role. The One Voice team all have a learning difficulty, disability or autism so were very interested in what the Mayor had to say.

It was really a great experience to meet the Mayor of this fantastic borough. I liked the points she made about disabilities and inclusion, because that really hits home with me.

The team are now busy editing the interview into the next edition of the brilliant Radio Without Barriers One Voice show.

One Voice is broadcast on Stockport Your FM 107.8 Wednesdays 8-9pm repeated on Saturdays 7-8am. All episodes are also available post-broadcast on Mixcloud. We will keep you posted on when you can hear this thought provoking interview.

Our warm thanks to Mayor Laura Booth. We hope you enjoyed your visit!
