Boathouse Gardeners Earn Horticulture Qualification

Posted on the 29th January 2020

Clients Ryan, Lee and Nathan from The Boathouse in Oldham were over the moon when they were awarded their certificate for the Level 1 Horticulture Qualification. A well deserved sense of achievement after their hard work in helping to maintain Alexandra Park.

Planting The Seed Of Success

For the qualification Pure teamed up with Oldham Council and Oldham College. The work was practical based and assessed by the college through observation, discussion, video and a photographic portfolio assembled by the clients. They had a number of tasks to complete to earn the Level 1 Horticulture award. These included:

  • Maintaining a planted area
  • Planting hanging baskets
  • Planting containers
  • Seasonal planting
  • Maintaining the park area

I enjoy everything about the gardening and I would tell others to give it a go. I liked being outside and working in a team. We have lots of fun. I have learned how to maintain a garden, plant a hanging basket and different flower names. I helped my mum planting bulbs and weeding in the garden. When I got my certificate I felt proud and happy!

Keeping The Park Pristine

Alexandra Park in Oldham definitely benefited from the group’s new found skills. During their qualification they spruced up the Boathouse Cafe planting vibrant flowers in the plant pots just outside the cafe. Some of these planters were made by the on-site woodwork team too. Even in the winter they kept the park looking as pristine as ever stripping the summer plants and replacing them with winter flowers and shrubs.

What’s Next For The Gardeners

The group will be continuing to harness their gardening skills and keeping Alexandra Park looking beautiful. A team at Dunwood Park are now following suit and taking part in the qualification as well. All the best to them!

Congratulations Ryan, Lee and Nathan at The Boathouse for your well deserved success.

Thyme to celery-brate!
