Posted on the 24th January 2020

Looking for something fun to enjoy with the kids this weekend? Why not take part in the the Big Garden Bird Watch at Vernon Park?

Vernon Park Cafe is also offering bird-related activities for children to complement this national survey by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).

Explore the beautiful park while learning about the wonderful wildlife that lives here. Look out for robins, chaffinches, blue tits, nuthatches and more. Record your findings on the printed sheets available at the cafe.

Art & Crafts at Vernon Park Cafe

For just £2 per child other activities are available:

Make Your Own Bird Cakes. Get hands on mixing nuts and dough and adding them to a small container. Packed it all in tightly so the mixture stays inside. Once complete, head outside and tie your bird cakes to a branch ready for the birds – or perhaps a cheeky squirrel! This activity is great, messy fun and perfect for kids.

Crafts and Colouring. Inside the cafe there will be bird-themed crafts and colouring. We will use all your fabulous pictures to decorate the cafe adding a lovely splash of colour to the room.

History Behind RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch

In 1979 the RSPB called for children to record the number and species of birds they see in their garden. This ‘one-off’ activity proved so successful that it has grown into the huge survey it is today, enjoyed by both children and adults.

Once you collect your findings you can hand them to staff at Vernon Park Cafe. They will forward them on to the RSPB.
