A Day With Manchester Airport Supported Interns

Posted on the 14th February 2020

Manchester Airport is a real hot spot for a range of job opportunities making it an exciting base for a Pure Supported Internship.

We spent the day at the airport catching up with interns, present – and past. They included Luke, who graduated from the programme last year and had called in for some advice. More on his exciting news later!

This year’s interns are working hard and here are examples of just how well they are doing

Paid Job For Nathan!

Nathan earned a paid job at World Duty Free in style. On the company’s recruitment day, which was open to the public, Nathan scored the highest of everyone on their written assessment. The employers had worked with us before and trusted that, with the support of our Employment Officers, Nathan would be a great fit for the role. They decided there was no need for a working interview and offered him a paid job straight away.

Congratulations Nathan!

Nathan had gained work experience on his first placement as a trolley handler. He will now take his new skills including working with customers, punctuality and professionalism to his new paid job at World Duty Free.

Nathan is particularly happy that he has secured a job at the airport: plane spotting is one of his favourite hobbies!

Megan Loves Office Role

Megan has a placement in administration. Her responsibilities include working with emails, databases and more. She also really enjoys helping to organise events such as afternoon teas and recruitment events.

The office where she works has great views of the runway. She was very interested to see fire crews practising their own skills fighting flames on a test airplane. It’s not your average office view!

I joined the Supported Internship to find a paid job, make new friends and get experience. I have learned lots about myself like my confidence and independence. I couldn't fault my role. Office work is what I want to do. I think the tutors are good. They explain things well and we have a good laugh. Sarah and Lisa (Pure Employment Officers) deserve an award!

Former Intern Luke: A Year Later

As mentioned, Luke was one of nine interns who secured a paid job last year. He has been enjoying his job at JD Sport ever since.

We bumped into him when he was visiting Pure Senior Employment Officers Sarah Osborne and Lisa Griffiths for help with his CV. Yes – we provide ongoing support after the interns have graduated.

Working at the airport really opens you up to the range of opportunities all around you and Luke was keen benefit from this. With his new CV he applied for a job in Ground Operations for Jet 2 – and he got it!

I was happy when I got the paid job at JD Sport. At first I was nervous, but I settled in quickly and started enjoying it. I like having my own responsibilities. I also like having my own money and getting more experience.

My advice to this year's interns would be to take the advice from the staff even if you think you know better. They know best. I didn't want to do a placement in Spar, but that is what got my confidence up.

I wouldn't have got the job at JD if it wasn't for Pure staff and the Tutors.

Former Intern - Luke

Well done Luke and  best wishes for your new job. It really goes to show what you can achieve through the Supported Internship.

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work!

The Manchester Airport Supported Internship is a partnership between Pure Innovations, The Manchester College and Manchester Airport. The college works with the interns in the morning teaching employment skills such as how to be professional in the workplace. Pure Innovations works with employers seeking out placement opportunities, carving job roles and helping the interns achieve their goals of paid work.

All the best to all this year’s Manchester Airport Supported Interns. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next.
