Tudors To The Titanic: Pure History Club Delves Deep

Posted on the 8th October 2021

Just look at this  fabulous display made by Pure clients with a fascination for history. From Guy Fawkes and The Gunpowder Plot  to the sinking of the Titanic, they delight in delving into our past. They then create these beautiful information boards for other clients to enjoy.

Creative Writing

Club members are often encouraged to write short pieces as one of  the characters they have researched. See the testament, written as though by Anne Boleyn, in the picture gallery below.  Supported by Pure staff, the club members are developing great creative writing skills while learning all about the terrible Tudors.

History Club Excursions

The group explores different periods of history and how they have shaped the world we  live in today. Their project on the Great War resulted in truly moving  art works and stories such as those above.

On a recent excursion to the Touchstones Museum the group was given a very informative guided tour by curator Bryan. They saw many artefacts relating to the war, including shrapnel found in Rochdale.  The visit also informed their project exploring life in Victorian times.

We saw Rochdale policemen's wooden truncheons and a gun! I also got to have a look at an old bar taken from a pub. Just a shame I didn't get to have a pint!

Not quite a perfect day then!

The group will soon be visiting Foxdenton Hall in Chadderton where Lydia Becker, a key suffragist, lived. This is part of the group’s focus on the battle for women’s right to vote. No doubt they will also be calling in at the  Lydia’s Tearoom next door, where other Pure clients now receive cafe training.

Sarah Barnes runs the Pure History club at our Middleton base, the Jonathan Burns Centre. She asked client Martyn what he like most about the Pure History Club.

Martyn said he really enjoys learning about history and feels very proud of himself when we finish a project and he gets to look at it displayed up on the wall.
