Four Tameside Internship Stories

The success stories keep pouring in from our Tameside Supported Interns! Here are four more from the group that have made the decisive step from Intern to paid employee.

"It's great working here. I love it. I like all the staff and I feel like I belong to the team."

Arron

Arron has found employment at Active Tameside. He began at Tameside Hospital, in their Central Bookings department, where he quickly impressed his manager by learning to multi-task and work off his own initiative. For his second placement he moved onto the Children’s Ward, where he learnt to properly sanitise medical equipment. Arron was able to transfer these skills to a paid role at Active Oxford Park as a leisure attendant. His role consists of sanitising gym equipment, cleaning changing rooms, hoovering and general housekeeping. He is going from strength to strength and learning new skills every day.

“I’m going to buy some computer games, and go to the pub with my dad and pay for a game of pool.”

John

john-sm-540x405John has found work in a different field. During a placement in the Medical Delivery Services department of Tameside Hospital he learnt to calibrate medical equipment. With the support and mentoring of the team at the hospital, John was soon showing real aptitude in his role, and when an opportunity for a maintenance technician came up at Active Medlock he jumped at the chance! He got the job, and now works on bike repairs, fire door checks, fire alarm tests, locker maintenance,  gym equipment checks and much more. He has also begun safety training so that he can work on the gym’s high walls.

“I’m really pleased for John. He’s worked so hard!”

Thomas

Thomas also began at Tameside Hospital, working on the Surgical Unit as part of the Housekeeping Team. With the help of the team’s excellent guidance he was soon carrying out his tasks – including laundry, cleaning, serving drinks and changing beds – independently, and excelling in all areas!

He moved on to a second work placement at Tameside Hospital, but after three weeks an opportunity arose for a paid position as Facility Assistant at Active Tameside’s Ashton site. A working interview with Tameside Active was arranged. These demonstrate a candidate’s suitability for a role to employers. After succeeding at this stage, he was given a face-to-face interview – and hired.

“Thomas has really impressed us and deserves this opportunity. I’m sure he will be a great asset to the centre and to Active Tameside!”

Jacob

Jacob, found talents in time management. His first placement was in Pathology stores at the Hospital, managing and preparing orders for local GP surgeries to be delivered by Hospital couriers. He was under constant pressure as each order needed to be sent out the same day. He did an excellent job, always getting the orders out on time. He then moved onto an external placement at Hollywood Bowl, where his role involved delivering food, hoovering, managing the games area, and looking after customers. He’s really developed his customer service skills and has even been recognised by name in two glowing reviews on TripAdvisor. Now that his twelve-week placement has come to an end he has been offered a paid role at Hollywood Bowl. How does he feel about it?

“I’m buzzing! I can’t wait to get paid!”
