Our Supported Internships offers young people with a learning disability like Aaron opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in the workplace.

The Right Support

Aaron joined our Manchester Supported Internship at MediaCityUK in September. He never dreamed he would find work quite so quickly. Aaron has moderate speech and language difficulties and also experiences high anxiety when faced with new people and places. We knew though that  he could acquire the skills required to be a dedicated and dependable employee. All he needed was the right support.

Kate Duffy, Senior Employment Officer with Pure Innovations, assessed Aaron’s support needs and sought out a perfect work placement for him. She found it at Anchor Group Services.

Partnership with Employers

Anchor Group provides high quality facilities management including security and cleaning services. Its clients include Salford University and a placement was found for Aaron working as a domestic assistant. Marta, Cleaning Operative Manager at Anchor, helped define a suitable role.

Angela, who also works for Anchor, proved an excellent mentor to guide and support Aaron when required. She did a fabulous job helping ease his anxieties and giving him reassurance whenever he needed it.

It's a thumbs up from Angela and Aaron.

Aaron had already tackled his anxieties head on in learning to travel independently by tram to Media City in the rush hour. That’s no mean feat. He was very nervous about starting a work placement in another location and with new people. With all the support in place though, Aaron rose to meet the challenge.

Work Transforms Lives

Work experience had a transformational effect on Aaron. He learned new skills, grew in confidence and developed in maturity.

Aaron’s managers recognised his ability and commitment.  They quickly demonstrated their faith in him by offering occasional paid hours  to cover staff leave. He worked so well that shortly before Christmas he was offered the one thing all the interns want: a permanent paid job. Great work Aaron!

I am really happy that I got a paid job and with my first wage I was able to buy the computers games that I enjoy playing.

It is great to see Aaron’s new found confidence since he started working for Anchor. He is doing really well and has quickly adapted and settled into his new role. Aaron recently received a Christmas voucher from his employer which he was thrilled about!
