GMCA Working Well Project: Sam Lands Paid Job
The pandemic has made it especially difficult for Sam to find paid employment this year. Undeterred, he joined the GMCA Working Well project and has since found a paid job as a Store Assistant at Asda.
The GMCA Working Well project allows us to support people in disadvantaged groups to find and sustain paid employment.
Sam started his journey with Pure Innovations on our Stepping Hill Supported Internship from 2019 to 2020. He applied himself well throughout the year, but like so many in lockdown he was unable to secure a paid job. Despite this setback he did not give up on achieving his goal to find employment.
Working Well is a Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) Supported Employment contract. It is part funded by the European Structural & Investment Fund. Pure delivers this across Stockport, Tameside and Oldham. PossAbilities also provides the service in Rochdale and Bury.
On being accepted on to the GMCA Working Well project, Sam was allocated an Pure Innovations Employment Officer. Over the following weeks he really got to know Sam through conversations and socially distanced walks. During this time he could see Sam’s confidence begin to grow more and more.
Applying For The Role
Once a clear idea of Sam’s attributes and employment preferences had been determined the job hunting could begin. With the support of his Employment Officer he applied for a Store Assistant role at Asda Superstore.
Sam’s application was a success and Asda invited him for an interview. Sam impressed the interview panel with his smart look, they even said he was by far the best dressed candidate. He also did himself proud answering all the questions really well.
It has been a privilege to work with Sam and to get to know him. He is a really caring and respectful young man that really deserves this opportunity. He presented himself really well at the interview and despite being anxious he overcame his nerves and answered all the questions he was asked in a polite and professional manner. I hope he continues to enjoy his job and wish him every success in the future.
I would also like to thank all the staff at Asda who have all been really helpful and welcoming. They are a great employer and in particular I would like to thank Jane Watson, Elly O’Neill and Chris Scalley for giving Sam this opportunity and for being so supportive.Desmond Hutton - Pure Employment Officer
Success for Sam
A few days after his interview Sam was delighted when he was offered his first paid job!
I am very grateful to Pure for helping me get paid work I am really enjoying it and I am getting more confidence as each day passes.Sam
It is a pleasure to see somebody as nice as Sam grow within the department. I have only heard good things about him so far.Chris Scalley - Sam's Employer (Asda)
It is early days in terms of Sam’s paid work career and this role is a temporary contract until the New Year. He has fitted in well so far and completed a number of shifts independently without any issues.
