James’s Media Work Skills Story
James enrolled on the Pure Media Work Skills course and ended up with his own weekly radio slot broadcasting on ALL FM 96.9!
It is a dream result for James who never gets flustered behind the mic and has a passion for all things media. Now he has another new role as a volunteer, assisting support workers on Pure 107.8FM’s very own One Voice Show.
James was an enthusiastic member of our Media Masters project and embraced all the general work skills elements of the course too, as he explains:
I spent ten weeks work experience at Stockport Bus Station, gaining hands-on experience & crucial insights into the world of employment and meeting some fantastic employees and customers.
I have also developed my skills in areas such as CV writing and preparation for job interviews and feel much more ready and capable to identify and sell my strengths to potential employers.
I also particularly enjoyed making and marketing our own bespoke hand-crafted Yuletide logs with the group, which were sold to the public at Manchester’s Christmas Markets!
On the course James learned a great deal about all aspects of the media including newspapers, social media, TV and particularlyradio. As Pure’s Sanderling Building is also home to Pure 107.8FM, the Media Masters group had unique access to Stockport’s busy community radio station. James loved it!
I was delighted to have been actively involved in the weekly ‘One Voice’ magazine show. Producer Paul Holloway has been incredibly supportive in encouraging my writing and presenting. It has been an invaluable opportunity to work in the hectic world of the media, cover some fascinating and worthy topics, and meet some brilliant guests.
Friends & family tell me my diction and verbosity have vastly improved over this last year. I largely credit this to my experience on One Voice!
I was also thrilled to interview some incredible guests including Olympic legend Matt Walker, singer/songwriter Scarlette and an inspirational lady, Helaina Stone who has an incredibly rare medical condition named Costello syndrome and travels the world with her hugely supportive parents raising awareness and money for vital research. With wonderful support and expert guidance from our course tutor Joe Williams, employment officer Jennette Taylor-Sains and many other brilliant employees, I have been given fantastic grounding in an exciting, fast-moving and relevant world, building a solid foundation for a future career – with several intriguing options for further study and experience.
Thanks to Joe I have a weekly slot on radio station ALL FM 96.9 called “Levenshulme Legends!. I can’t quite believe I have my own weekly radio slot! And of course I have a few “One Voice” ideas I am developing too.
James’s weekly Friday morning slot at 8.45am is all about ghostly goings on in and around Manchester, conspiracy theories and much more. Spooky and fun!
