As an Specialist Employability College, Pure College is dedicated to supporting students’ career progression, and everything that we do is focused on getting young people ‘work-ready’.

The process of learning about career and acquiring career development skills is about more than presenting people with a list of skills. Career development skills have to be actively learnt, rather than just being ticked off a list and our curriculum supports students to gain a deeper understanding with opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a very practical and real way.

Developing Career Knowledge

We support students to understand that the progression into a new career can be varied and the learning in the classroom helps them recognise what they need to know and be able to do to. Starting a new career is not just a process of choosing a job early in life, rather it is a process of ongoing learning and development that takes place throughout life.

Gatsby Benchmarks

The GATSBY benchmarks are a set of eight guidelines that aim to improve career guidance and opportunities for young people. Here’s how we integrate these benchmarks into our curriculum:

  • We have a structured careers program that is embedded within the overall curriculum; employability is at the heart of what we do.
  • We collaborate with employers and external organisations to enhance college life for students and have excellent relationships with local companies.
  • Our curriculum includes lessons on careers and the labour market, using real-world examples and case studies to help students understand different career paths.
  • We involve local employers and industry experts to provide insights into the current job market.

All students access personalise career guidance to meet their individual needs and aspirations; working closely with employment officers to help them identify their strengths, interests, and skills.

  • The curriculum is carefully designed to help students make connections to employability in their learning. English and Maths studies are functional and topics all support students to consolidate their skills and knowledge in relation to employability.
  • We invite professionals to speak about how their academic background connects to their current roles.
  • Students enjoy workplace visits, career fairs, and employer talks.
  • We have created partnerships with local businesses to provide students with real-world exposure, facilitating work shadowing and internship opportunities.
  • Students all access purposeful work experience placements.
  • We provide reflective activities to help students gain insights from their workplace experiences and identify next steps.
  • We have a good relationship with other educational provisions around the local area and invest in quality transitions to ensure student success.
  • Where appropriate we provide information and guidance on various educational pathways and entry requirements.
  • Employment officers provide individualised career guidance and support.
  • Through the curriculum we support students to complete applications, write their CVs, and prepare for interviews.

By aligning the employability curriculum with these benchmarks, we have created a comprehensive and effective framework that prepares students for their future careers.  We regularly assess and update the curriculum to ensure it remains relevant and meets the evolving needs of both students and the job market.
