Writing My Own Headlines: Tom’s Story

Tom’s autism has never affected his self-belief. In fact, it’s his superpower. From the moment Tom identified the tools and support needed to secure paid employment the rest was history, and the future was bright.

Whilst his joinery studies at college were progressing, Tom knew that his confidence and lack of independence may become a barrier to employment further down the line. With this in mind, he was soon referred to Pure Innovation’s Supported Internship Programme, which would take place once the college year had ended. Tom’s development however, was well on its way before he walked through Pure’s doors, teaching himself to travel independently throughout the summer months and elevating his confidence to a whole new level.

With a spring in his step and confidence in bountiful supply, Tom’s employment officer was able to teach the essentials of CV Writing and interview preparation – designed to support clients into the world of paid employment.

Opportunities soon followed, with a Store Assistant work placement at Salford University becoming available before progressing into the role of Handyperson at the organisation. Here, Tom developed a fantastic reputation; colleagues became friends, work became a passion and every day he found himself growing into the person he’d always hoped to be. However, it was late February when Tom found himself lost for words.

Toms story

Barely 5 months had passed since Tom had begun his employment journey through Pure and following a successful interview, he managed to secure a permanent job offer at the university as a Building Attendant. The team are over the moon to have him on board and can’t wait to support his growth even further: “I could see Tom had huge potential and I wanted to give him a chance. He is a confident and committed young man who always gives his best” – Salford University

Tom is due to start his new role later this month, and after gathering his words, is so proud of the direction his life is now heading: “I can’t wait to get my first wage and give something back to my mum. I’m feeling very proud and it’s all thanks to the hard work of Christine and Helen”
