Stephen’s Journey from Career Setback to Business Owner with the IPS Wellness in Work Programme
Stephen, a former owner of a thriving design company, encountered a significant mental health challenge that prompted him to leave the business and embark on a career transition. Seeking support, he reached out to the IPS team in July 2023, expressing an interest in jewellery design during their work development plan meetings.
Individual Placement and Support (IPS) offers intensive, individually tailored mental health employment support to help people who are recovering from severe conditions to find the right job, or will help them if their job is at risk.
Recognising his potential, Employment Specialist Julia referred Stephen for a better-off-in-work calculation and provided guidance by connecting him with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for advice on establishing his new venture.
Understanding the importance of networking and sales, she also facilitated introductions with employers and local retailers to aid in generating sales and fostering relationships with shop owners who could potentially carry his earrings.
Taking the initiative, Stephen independently created his website and officially launched his jewellery business in February. The autonomy and flexibility inherent in self-employment not only enabled him to pursue his passion but also afforded him the ability to effectively manage both his physical and mental well-being.
